Till now, the West could never understand the thinking of the Chinese people. If you study deep enough and forget about all the propaganda from the Western Media, you would find that the Chinese people are willing to sacrifice personal interest in exchange of collective interest for their country. They believe that since they have chosen to be part of the society and in order to have a better life, they must first have a strong nation. In order for the nation to be strong, collective interests takes priority over individual interests. This is opposite to what the West practices whereby freedom of speech and individual rights are more important any anything else.
Due to the lacking of political awareness and proper understanding of the China's history, the young people in Hong Kong are deeply confused and traumatized when it comes to the choices between individual interests and collective interests.
In China, 800 million people has been lifted out of poverty. Every Chinese is able to pursue the life they wish to have and they are free to travel to any country they want to. They are living prosperously and get to enjoy all kinds of new technologies under the ruling of the Communist party. They have chosen to forego the so called Western style of free speech in exchange for a long term stability and prosperity. This is their choice. You would only be punished when you break the laws. That includes creating social unrest that undermines the progress and stability of the society.
By Chinese's standard, listening to their government and following government's instructions does not mean their civil rights are being taken away. If they think it is something good for the country and their fellow citizen, and even if they have to forego part of their freedom and rights, they would still do it.
This thinking, which the West refuses to give credit to, has jolly well propelled China into a super power that the West refuses to acknowledge.
The Chinese understand how a country should be run. It has to be through good leadership. They believe good leaders are selected based on merits. A leader should not be elected just because he is popular.
The Chinese also think there is no such thing as a free country. It is all about where you draw the line and how much personal interests are you prepared to forego in order to trade for a larger gain for the community as a whole. With the right leadership, China has proven that socialism is not an evil when you know how to use it correctly. Don't forget that this is a world of nations competing against nations. Weak countries would always get bullied. Without a strong nation backing you up, you are simply nothing.

Let the rumbling begin
So many lives could have been saved, not wasted during the
Indochina Wars if when The United States found itself at a crossroads of being
able to choose what I would like to call a more righteous path, chose the wrong one. Having once been a colonial
colony itself and seeing a nation trying to shake off their colonial chains,
when it came to choosing sides, one would have thought even these so many years
later it would have been an easy choice, but no, America allowed itself to be
tainted and painted into a corner by cold war fears of Communism and nothing
else. Today, America is once again at pretty much the same kinda crossroad with
regards to Hong Kong and may yet still choose to take the wrong road and not
openly support the pro-democracy movement, for whatever reasoning and fears. And
as an add on, its well known China is very advanced in facial recognition
technology, is trying to outlaw face masks during demonstrations enabling
arrests after the fact, would be a little like banning finger print technology
for the same reasonings, the people of Hong Kong are so much wiser then the
main-land Chinese, or so it seems by refusing to unmask…
