Well thank you very much for being here.
This is absolutely one of my favorite events in the entire year. Tonight –
it’s definitely a true celebration. You know that the Tucson Unified School
District I prefer not to think of us as roughly 9,000 employees. Because if you
haven’t noticed what you are – you’re life coaches, you’re relationship managers, you’re dream inspirers, you’re counselors, you’re instructors, you’re expert hug givers. you’re
experts in emotional management. You’re coaches on decision-making, you’re life
changers. Because the most powerful experience that a child is going to have
going into adolescence and into adulthood is a thing called school.
Because there’s some very powerful things that happen in school when a
child hits kindergarten or if we can ever get to the day universal preschool
for everybody everywhere anytime anyplace. So yes absolutely.
When a child hits a preschool classroom or a kindergarten classroom it’s their
first exposure to an adult relationship outside the home – what it is to have
somebody believe in them. What it is to have somebody care about them to have a
framework and a belief about who they can be. And the wonderful dream that will
happen when a child that is meets the child that will be at the end of the
year. This powerful experience is really simply the remedy to a lot of things
that we complain about as Americans as Arizonans and as residents of the City
of Tucson. It’s a comprehensive technology this thing called school that
if we invest in and we go all-in with and we support our relationship managers
and our dream coaches and our life coaches and our expert hug givers we
actually have the remedy in this place called school to eradicate poverty, to
make sure that a 100% employment rate in the City of
Tucson and across America, to make sure that we have absolutely zero drug abuse
going on in the city, to make sure that we have a 100% civically engaged population.
Because that’s what education can do for a society if we actually fully invest in
and support all those that partake in this powerful experience called school
and really work to transform the lives of students because that happens one
relationship at a time. Because yes this is Teacher Appreciation Week and we
celebrate the amazing work that our teachers do but teachers are not alone.
That bus driver that smiles and welcomes a student onto the bus creates an
indelible memory about what a child believes about what adults believe about
them. That lunchlady that helps a student understand what their options are when
mom and dad don’t necessarily have money for lunch. That creates a very, very
powerful memory about what adults are here to do for children. That counselor
that wraps around a student when things aren’t going well at home or were
there’s relational problems with other students. That creates a very, very
powerful memory and experience about what adults are here to do for kids. That
security monitor that steps in when he sees a child’s safety is
at risk and creates a safe spot for students. That creates a very, very
powerful memory in the mind of a child about why adults are here. So in my mind
you are all superstars and I wish I had 9,000 pins to give all of you this
evening because you’re what makes the Tucson Unified School District amazing
and special. Because this place called school here it’s powered by people and
passion and pride and I am proud to be your superintendent. Let the festivities
begin let the celebration begin because tonight we celebrate the stars! Thank you!
