Scalloway is the first fire festival of the season all the different communities have their own Up Helly Aa’s and festivals and there’ll be hundreds of squads, it involves a massive amount of people. It’s an honour and a privilege to be the Guizer Jarl for Scalloway I cannot quite believe that the day is nearly here. It’s just around the corner now. and it’s going to be me in the galley It’s a humbling thing, I’m looking forward to it. Everybody pulls together to make the galley, the squad gets together to make the torches, I was working nearly every night for the last couple of months, A lot of places have their mens sheds, for guys to get together, and that’s really what squads are doing, they’ll gather at somebody’s house or somebody’s garage, you’re always speaking to other boys out of your squad, you’re rigging (working) on your suit, and your acts and props, for the forthcoming festival. It gets you through the winter, I think it’s a big thing for Shetland. Every bit of the day is good, it runs that fast. You’re getting everybody together. It was good seeing all the bairns in the squad rigged (dressed) up. I think they’re really excited about it, it’s really good to see them being the centre of attention. It’s fantastic to have my daughter and my dad in the squad along with me and it means a lot to me. It’s really great when you go into the schools and you see them all excited for us coming in, and they are singing the songs, it’s really good, we look forward to that bit. We go to the old folks homes and we go
to the school, it brings everybody together. It’s gonna be a completely different perspective, standing in the galley and seeing the ranks of torches behind you, and everybody cheering. It’s gonna be very different, very memorable.
