I’m in LA at the 35th anniversary of Air Force 1s. We have about 300 of the hardest to find Air Force 1s. We’re gonna customize our own white on white kicks. Talk to Don C about his new collaboration Rasheed Wallace, a lot of action and excitement here I’m really geeked about it. Let’s go… The project is celebrating the 35th year of the design And the 100th colorway, which is the white on white. My first collaboration was 2013 When they reached out for me to do a charity shoe And then to come back around and be able to give your influence, and your take on it it’s surreal. I started wearing Air Force 1s cause of my older brothers. They were sneakerheads Everything they did and had, I wanted. What does “Air Force 1” mean? I mean, what does that culture mean? It’s almost synonymous with hip hop culture. Air Force 1s started in ’82 Hip hop started in ’78. And they kind of came up together. What inspired you to start designing and start creating your own versions? With Air Force 1 being an inconic shoe for me growing up and when I was able to join the Nike team and they said, like, come up with your own Air Force 1 I was ecstatic. The first person I called was my brother. I was like, “yo, guess what?” “You know, they’re giving us our own shoe.” Me, personally, I always try to infuse sport Into everything. So you know that about me. It could be New Year’s Eve, tuxedo night I’m gonna have something “sport” on (laughs) What do you think it is about the AF1 That has caused it to become it’s own brand? It’s own signature? Its simplicity. If you look at the “crispy whites” It’s a canvas. It’s a blank canvas. Everyone’s an artist. You’re a Michelangelo when it comes to the Air Force 1s. It’s a shoe that everybody can tweak it differently To express their individual style. There’s so much you can do with it You can rock ’em at weddings You can rock ’em with clean jeans and a nice crispy white tee. Nice little hat. There’s many ways you can shape ’em up, baby. Make your own AF1s. It’s like a kid’s dream come true. This is exciting. Alright, so how does it go down? So what are you thinking man? I am thinking, maybe, “Esquire”? This is my first piece Esquire piece You know, I’m a tattoo artist first and foremost but I work with Nike a lot I think the font should really tell the story It’s gonna be the feel of the whole word. Whatever you’re feeling. What’s happening I’m here at my house in Chicago And I just got my box sent to me with my custom Air Force 1s. Bam! Let’s check it out. Oh yeah. Let’s see how these babies turned out. oh yeah Bam. Classic. Air Force 1s. Alright. Take care!
