So we do some crazy stuff on my Youtube Channel. Festivals, Abandoned places… but right now we are walking towards one of the most insane festivals I’ve ever come across in my entire life. We are in San Juan de la Vega in Guanajuato, Mexico. And this is the Exploding Hammer Festival I’ve got goosebumps Since today is the day of San Juan Bautista, there’s normally a parade with his altar, and it goes around town. Back in the day, they used to follow this parade with exploding hammers through the streets of San Juan de la Vega. That’s the city we were just in. Windows were smashing, it wasn’t a good thing to do in a small little town, as you can imagine. So they moved the exploding hammers to the middle of a field. But the parade still happens. This is the most insane thing I have ever seen in my life There’s about a hundred guys out here with homemade explosives on the end of sledgehammers Ugh, you can feel the force Boom. You can feel it in your lungs, in your heart, in your chest. Anywhere there’s air in your body. The shockwaves just run through the air pockets These guys are three feet away from these explosions. Right now I’m… 10 meters Ten times the distance that they are. It shakes my lungs. It’s actually quite difficult to film, Surprise, Surprise. Because there are five circles with everyone hitting hammers at each circle. And sometimes, the hammers go spinning off into the air. I’ve seen it happen twice already. If I’m filming, I’m looking at the camera, and I can’t see around me. So I…. … I always have to be watching them so I know what… … What the hammers are doing. Someone just got hurt. I think he had rocks go up into his eyes Oh wait no, it’s his ears. The explosion was so hard it ruptured his eardrum. This is Franky, you’re from San Juan de la Vega, yeah? He’s been doing it since he was six years old, and he’s going to be our GoPro model today. So it’s really crazy, he’s gonna get right in the middle of it all, and show us what it’s like in the Pit. This GoPro is 4 years old. If we lose it, this will be a beautiful death. But if we get it…. the Footage is going to be so sick. Let’s try it I got my hammer! This thing is super heavy, we have a little explosive on the end. I’m entering the battlefield. – Everyone is watching me..
– Hahaha because you’re Guerro! We’re just wrapping up our day at the exploding hammer party– –I’m a little bit anxious still– In San Juan de la Vega. This festival is absolutely… I mean I knew it was going to be nuts. They’ve been going since 9am, it’s almost 3pm. Some of these guys went to the hospital today. We saw it happen. – Someone lost their pinky.
– We saw a finger… depart. Either way, despite this being a little bit dangerous for people who are exploding hammers. Mexico as a country, is such an incredible, unbelievable place. The people are so nice. There’s a couple of pockets you want to stay out of, but it’s a country ripe for exploration and there’s amazing adventures right around the corner And if you’re ever in the area, you need to check out this festival Because it’s un-freaking-beleivable.
– It’s about 2 hours north of Mexico City This is my buddy Ryan, he makes awesome videos. He had a drone today and even BBC like… the real BBC were here. And they were like… “Dude, can we have some of your drone footage?” They didn’t even bring a drone, I mean c’mon BBC step your game up. Make sure to check out his channel, and his video of the festival. Experiences over Possessions Kick the Grind. Catch you guys next Wednesday.
